“I stay in the middle of the crowd — dancing and shooting with the people.”
Costantino Idini is an Italian documentary photographer whose work focuses on communities and shared human experiences.
For more than forty years he has photographed people in the environments where life is lived collectively: streets, music venues, rituals, gatherings and social spaces. Rather than observing from a distance, his approach is immersive — entering the scene and working from within the communities he encounters. His long-term projects move between different cultural contexts, from youth and social environments in South America and Ireland in What Do You Want Out of Life, to traditional shoulder-borne rituals in Italy in Il Peso del Sacro, as well as projects exploring jazz culture, popular gatherings and collective moments of celebration.Across these different worlds runs a common thread: an interest in the energy of human gatherings and the fragile balance between identity, belonging and shared experience. His photography seeks dignity, vitality and authenticity in the places where people come together to live, celebrate and dream.
